French is the primary working language at the SPCA de l’Outaouais. Fluency in spoken French is required for this position.
The SPCA de l’Outaouais is looking for animal caretakers to join its dynamic team!
Animal caretakers keep work areas clean, feed and handle the animals, ensure their well-being, and support the veterinary team as the first line of defense. They play an essential role in meeting the physical and emotional needs of the animals in their care.
Job Type
We currently have two openings:
• One full-time position, during the day, on weekdays and weekends (approximately every other weekend or every third weekend);
• One part-time position (16 hours per week), on Saturdays and Sundays.
The starting salary for this position is $17.00 per hour.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide basic care for the animals according to established protocols
- Clean and disinfect cages, enclosures, and facilities daily
- Walk the dogs while following safety guidelines;
- Monitor the animals’ general condition (appetite, stool, energy level, behavior);
- Record and report relevant information on the animals’ behavior and progress during their stay;
- Participate in enrichment activities (walks, plays, stimulation) to promote the animals’ well-being;
- Strictly follow care, hygiene, and safety protocols;
- Provide support to colleagues and collaborate with the health team as needed;
- Organize and keep storage areas tidy;
- Receive orders, verify their contents, and store them properly;
- Actively contribute to maintaining a safe, functional, and respectful work environment.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
- High school diploma;
- Certificate as an animal caretaker (an asset).
Experience
- Experience in a similar position (an asset);
- Experience working with animals (an asset).
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to read and apply various protocols;
- Must be comfortable with food measurements, including fractions (e.g., a quarter cup), and able to convert quantities as needed;
- Fluency in French;
- Knowledge of English (an asset);
- Good physical stamina;
- Ability to work well under pressure;
- Ability to read and interpret feline and canine body language (an asset).
