Pet Census

SPCA de l’Outaouais – City of Gatineau

The SPCA de l’Outaouais, in partnership with the City of Gatineau, is conducting a pet census campaign. This essential initiative helps ensure animal welfare, community safety, and compliance with municipal regulations.

Why a census?

The census allows us to:

Count the animals present in the area
Update owner information (address, contact details, spay/neuter status, etc.)
Improve licence compliance
Raise public awareness of their obligations as pet owners

It is also an essential tool for better planning the services offered to the public.

Campaign timeline

Division of the territory

To ensure effective coverage, the territory is divided into sectors:

Sector A: Gatineau (Year 1)
Sector B: Hull (Year 2)
Sector C: Aylmer (Year 3)

This rotation allows us to maintain an up-to-date database across the entire territory.

Census takers’ visits

During their visit to your home, census takers will:

Confirm the presence of animals in your household
Update your record if you are already in good standing (e.g., check for new animals)
Will be able to assist you in purchasing a licence if your animal does not already have one

Important :

No cash payments will be accepted at the door
The information collected is minimal and respects your privacy

What if you’re not home?

In case of non-cooperation

Simplified billing (exceptional measure)

To facilitate compliance during the census period:

Temporary reduction in late fees
Simplified rates (valid for a limited time)

Additionally:

Licence valid for 12 months from the date of purchase
Set up automatic renewal, with advance notice, an option to unsubscribe, and the ability to update your payment method

Why register your pet?

Obtaining a licence is mandatory and essential for several reasons:

To quickly find your pet if it gets lost
Fund services provided for animals and the community
To better understand the animal population in the area

Failure to comply with regulations can result in fines ranging from $300 to $1,000 for a first offense.

Licence and microchip: a winning combination

The municipal licence and microchip work together.

The licence allows for quick identification of an animal at the municipal level
The microchip provides permanent identification
